Applied to materials, “shape memory” refers to their ability to return to an original state after undergoing deformation through an artistic process of transformation. In the group exhibition Shape Memory, this concept becomes a lens through which to explore the relationship between matter, gesture, and the presence of the body.
In the works of Nefeli Papadimouli, shape memory emerges through textile structures, true sculptural garments that preserve the imprint of the body. Suspended in space like a mobile installation, these forms appear as available matrices, ready to be inhabited, animated, or reinterpreted. Each fabric holds the trace of an absent body, reactivating a temporal and perceptive memory.
In the sculpture of Sila Candansayar, shape memory is embedded in the very structure of the material. Her elongated and articulated forms seem to inhabit a state of unstable equilibrium, held in tension and constantly on the verge of crossing a critical threshold. Polished wood and blown glass preserve the traces of the gestures that shaped them: sanding, carrying, adjusting, balancing. The sculpture does not represent the body, but evokes its physical conditions weight, gravity, and resistance and transforming them into a suspended presence.
In the most recent works of Clédia Fourniau, the notion of shape memory unfolds through gesture and materiality. Colour and surface gradually give way to action, transforming the canvas from a screen that reflects the body of the other into a space of inscription where the artist’s own body emerges in relief. Through elementary marks, doodles, symbols, rainbows, and essential forms, the artist activates a process of deconstruction and visual rewriting.
